Report — climax of Hamid Mir’s targeted-shooting

Saturday, 19 April 2014

Karachi: The senior anchorperson of private leading TV, Hamid Mir was injured in a targeted-shooting. The senior anchor was shot three times while he was heading to the TV office near Natha Khan Bridge.

Geo News and Hamid Mir’s brother alleged Pakistan spy ISI, while ISPR condemned such allegations and added raising allegations against the ISI or the head of ISI without any basis was highly regrettable and misleading.

Karachi police chief, Shahid Hayat said Hamid Mir has been shot thrice; one bullet has pierced his intestine while the other two have wounded his leg and pelvic area.

Turning point:

According to Shahid Hayat, he was shot three times — while according to the broadcast footage, Hamid Mir has no bloodstains on his car seats despite he received three bullets.

On the other side, Geo-based anchorpersons made so much noise against ISI on social media networks and Geo reporter unveiled on-air that Mir has lost a lot of blood.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) top gun, Omar Khalid Khorasani, Saturday said Hamid Mir reaped what he had sown

So, do you really think that ISI or Pak-Army is involved in this attack?

or, is it just a conspiracy against ISI?

Blog: What is Owen Bennett-Jones interest in Pakistan?

Sunday, 2 February 2014

By Danish Kazi | 03-02-2014
Owen Bennett Jones is a free lance journalist who hosts one of the programs in a global media channel. If you check is profile. His main contribution to the literary community is his book “Pakistan : Eye of the Storm” . A book touching on the serge of Talibanization in the country written in 2002-3 followed by new editions over years. Also, if you see he has been showing keen interest all these years in the affairs of the country. Interesting to be in case you are a foreign journalist.

He is seen as pointing fingers against Pakistan Army for the many issues faced in Pakistan. So much so in one of his books . He correlates our Army to Lord Shiva seen as the sustainer as well as a destroyer of Pakistan. He was seen actively accusing ISI post Osama Bin Laden’s episode. But though he has been so much actively keeping an eye on the country. His claim to fame came once he started accusing MQM for the murder of Dr. Imran Farooq who was one of the founding members of the party.

Initially, I just ignored his overtures against MQM knowing that he is a free lance journalist and not necessarily represents the view of the media channel who ran the documentary against MQM last year and that may be some of his friends in the Pakistani media who would like to put pressure on MQM to withdraw from the PPP government would have done so since may be they would like to play behind the scenes . Also, possibly he may be good friends with our Tsunami Bhabi i.e. Jemima Khan and though she is no more married to Imran Khan but bearing his two sons still feels she has a right to interfere in the Pakistani government. It looks like the populist evening newspaper style reporting that he has done in the video doubts me to believe that such a channel would be behind such a low quality produced video; having ardently myself following it for many years but I am sure they had to give in to him for some reasons which maybe contractual or otherwise.

But what made me sit and do more desk research on the gentlemen was the coincidence of his new documentary which he stated as part 2 against MQM and its leadership right at the time when peace negotiations got kicked off with Taliban and MQM is seen as the only party voicing its concerns with the same. The strategy to distract MQM so that instead of charging against such negotiations. They are left with defending their own reputation. Our proud Pakistan Army who has given thousands of lives in sustaining Pakistan’s strata for the people of Pakistan in line with the vision of Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had only one party seemingly on their side opposing negotiations and that was MQM as the rest out of reasons known to them only submitted to the same surprisingly PPP who came into power only when Benazir Bhutto was killed by Taliban. As per reports in the media . I am sure the army which was purportedly ready for action and being a major stakeholder seen quiet on the issue till now must have been taken aback. So it looks like that the new offensive against MQM was timed in concurrence to those in tune with the negotiations at the top be done.

Recently , Mr. Jones wrote a piece a few days ago and reportedly stated and confirmed that he was in contacts with people who are close to Taliban and discussed at length the implications of the drone strikes in the province of KPK. A leading local Pakistani newspaper carried the story. Now if you think of it the news piece was published in sync with at the same time when PTI was kick starting their anti drone campaign . I am sure Mr. Jones had nothing to do with the same and it was just an innocent coincidence. I am also very much surprised to see that as per his claims he has links to Taliban which I am sure is only for his professional purposes.

But as we all know that there is nothing like a free lunch in the world. The question is what Mr. Jones had to pay in return for getting important news from the other side. Also, it makes me wonder what has been the reason for Mr. Jones for interfering in Pakistan and his only book as I can find on the web makes me think that unless he was born here which he was not. Unless he had a daughter or son in law from here which isn’t . What other reason he could have in interfering in Pakistan’s domestic political issues instead of hitting on Pakistan’s recent policy stand on Taliban though he had been very vocal about it?

I sometimes wonder. Does he really understand what role Dr. Imran Farooq played during the 90’s operation? Why was he under hiding and where he has been hiding? I am sure he would have researched on that . Further, he wants to make me believe that Altaf Hussein knowingly his situation where he is at the blade of the sword for much trivial issues would be naive enough to take a shot at Dr. Imran Farooq and that too a day before his birthday . He wants me to believe that knowing that Scotland Yard is a tough agency who has cracked much more difficult cases and that too against Al Qaeda and their likes. Any one would be insane enough to deliver such a deadly attack in the heart of Britain though whatever could have been the political rivalry if there was any. Further, Mr. Jones wants me to believe that Scot Land Yard who has solved many grave murder mysteries have not been able to solve this one all these years. The proof is that Mr. Hussein has not been formally charged or even referred to in this case. I wonder who gave the right to Mr. Jones to accuse anyone of a murder when the judicial system is yet to do the same. Many questions like this come to my mind and that of many if you think progressively and without bias.

So all it makes me believe that the recent attack on MQM and Altaf Hussein right at the outset of the negotiations with Taliban and drawing parallel to the above proximity to the anti MQM elements in the country who want to wash their dirty linen abroad. Maybe he had to write it to please his friends who have been giving him intelligence on Pakistan all these years as definitely he is not a friend of Pakistan as well; as he has been accusing ISI on having links to Al Qaeda and Mumbai attacks etc. Maybe it could be that his friends in Taliban camp would have asked him as a strategy to release this video to distract MQM so that they pursue their course of insanity. In that case , I wonder what does he get in return. I am sure it does not come for free.

My view on this is simple. PTI who has strong friends abroad is behind this smear campaign as they try to kill two birds with one stone. One maligning MQM and Two pursuing with the desire of negotiating with Taliban as per their election promises. I am sure what ever the case its not in the interest of Pakistan. As for Mr. Jones who was a lesser known brand name in Pakistan is more known now. I am sure he is biased as he has not done his journalistic home work in detail otherwise he could have understood the motive well behind the Dr. Imran Farooq murder and who benefited the most from it. Its definitely not MQM and Altaf Hussein from any angles. I am sure had he researched the history and the recent past . He could have ascertained. I am sure he is hanging to his ego as I am sure at this day and age . He cannot go back on his story and loose his credibility and may be his job. What I am confused with is that why is he aligning with the same mindset in Pakistan against MQM who has been an ally in the war against terror? Why is he allying with those like TTP and Co who have killed UK’s sons and daughters during 7/7 and in Afghanistan.

I am sure he has chosen a price which we would all soon know or may be its part of a blanket deal and hitting MQM is an agenda knowing the animosity which TTP has against MQM knowing that it’s the only party standing between them and absolute route in the country and especially Karachi. I hope logic would prevail. I hope the drama of negotiation would end. I hope Mr. Jones gets his price and I hope he fails in his effort to derail Pakistan . Pakistan Zindabad!

Drone attacks were carried out with the consent of Pakistan: Ex-ISI Chief reveals

Tuesday, 9 July 2013

09-07-2013
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan reached an understanding with the United States on drone strikes targeting Islamist militants and the attacks can be useful, according leaked remarks from a former intelligence chief.

Pakistan publicly condemns US missile attacks on Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives as a violation of its sovereignty, but the new revelations are the latest sign of double-dealing in private.

Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who headed Pakistan's premier Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency at the time of bin Laden's killing in 2011, told investigators that drone strikes had their uses.

"The DG (director general) said there were no written agreements. There was a political understanding," the report said.

He also confirmed that Shamsi air base, in southwestern Pakistan, had been used for US drone strikes against people in the country.

Pasha said US arrogance "knew no limits" and accused the Americans of waging "psychological warfare" over the whereabouts of Taliban leader Mullah Omar and bin Laden's successor Ayman al-Zawahiri.

He quoted a US intelligence officer as saying "you are so cheap... we can buy you with a visa," and said himself that systemic failures showed Pakistan was a "failing state".

Ch. Nisar alleges ‘ISI’ for its involvement in the Quetta blast

Thursday, 20 June 2013

21-06-2013 | Pakistan Today
ISLAMABAD -

Arif Alvi says Mujahid Ali’s demand personal view and nothing to do with PTI

Ijaz, Hiraj confront Nisar over his allegations against ISI

Dar to windup debate on finance bill today

A lawmaker of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) triggered a new controversy in the Lower House of parliament on Thursday by demanding an “honourable release” for Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer evoking a fiery response from the PPP with its legislator, Nafeesa Shah denouncing it.

However, senior PTI leader Dr Arif Alvi intervened and distanced his party from the irresponsible statement made by one of the members of his party, Mujahid Ali, saying that it was Ali’s personal view and had nothing to do with the party.

Moreover, eyebrows were raised within the PML-N as two treasury members, Ijazul Haq and Raza Hayat Hiraj, confronted the allegations made the other day by none other than the interior minister, Nisar Ali Khan, against the top intelligence agency of the country, the ISI, for its involvement in the Quetta blast.

Both lawmakers said accusing agencies was not right as it was "our army" and not that of India or any other state.

The lawmakers from both sides of the political divide expressed their views on the finance bill 2013-14 as Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar is likely to make his winding-up speech on the budget today (Friday), which would be followed by voting for the passage of the bill.

With a strong muscle, the PML-N and its allied parties are likely to get the finance bill passed in the next week.

Taking part in the budget discussions, PTI President Javed Hashmi said the finance bill offered nothing to the poor of the country while the government through the budget had given a clear message that feudals were free to go scot-free while the poor would have to bear the expenditures of the government.

He said it was very unfortunate that the government had virtually turned the direction of the taxes from the rich to the poor.

"No taxes are being levied on sugar mills, textile mill owners and feudals. The government has once again opted to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), hence, picking up the begging bowl which it claims to have broken a decade ago," Hashmi said.

He demanded Islamabad make separate provinces to properly manage the affairs of the metropolitan with two million population as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) alone could not manage such a large city.

He urged the government to resolve the issues of the people as it was the best time for the PML-N to deliver, saying that the PTI would stand by it in all efforts that were taken to provide relief to the poor.

Hashmi lamented the law and order in the country, saying if all the parties came on the one page, “nobody will dare conduct drone strike inside our country”.

Syed Saqlain Bukhari said the victory in general elections was a test for the PML-N, adding that all efforts would be made to come up to the expectations of the masses. He said the previous government had failed to provide any relief to the people as none of the programmes launched in the last five years could produce the desired results.

Dr Mehrren Razaq Bhutto said the government had announced paying the circular debt (CD) within two months, but had not said how it would pay such a large amount in such a short period of time.

Tehmina Daultana said the PML-N had shown a big heart and let the Baloch Nationalist Party (NP) form government in Balochistan and let the PTI form government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Mehmood Bashir Virk of the PML-N said the government employees’ salaries should be increased.

Tahira Aurangzeb of the PML-N said it was a record that after coming into power, the PML-N government had presented its first budget in just five days.

Sheharyar Afridi said Pakistan's integrity “is at stake due to our fight against each other”. He said an increase of 1 percent in the general sales tax (GST) will have a great impact on the people.

Jamshed Dasti stressed for forging unity, saying, “We have achieved independence after giving great sacrifices, so nobody should talk against the country.” He said the situation in Karachi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan was a real challenge for the current government.

He urged the government to check smuggling to enhance its revenue collections and also demanded fixing quota of three seats for labourers and one seat for eunuchs in the National Assembly.

Ali Hassan Gilani said it was time that all stakeholders sat together to help overcome the challenges the country was facing and lead the country towards development and prosperity.

Rana Mohammad Hayat Khan said elimination of terrorism was one of the priorities of the government. He said the government should remove all the employees recruited by the PPP government without following any merit.

Beelum Husnain said instead of imposing new taxes, the government should have introduced reforms to make it more reliable.

Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan said the PTI would always support the initiatives to be taken for the betterment of the country as well as the nation. He said the party demanded tough measures against corruption, causing losses to the national exchequer.

Sajid Ahmed criticising the budgetary documents also highlighted deteriorating law and order in Karachi and asked the government to take concrete measures.

Raza Hayat Hiraj said policies should be devised to end unemployment and create employment opportunities in the country. He said poverty could not be eliminated by merely giving Rs 1,200 per month to the poor. “This programme will only produce beggars,” he added.

Rehan Hashmi said the government should focus on the already-started projects instead allocating money for new projects. He said WAPDA had already completed feasibility studies of several hydro projects, however, no allocation was made to tap hydro potential for power generation.

Aijaz Chaudhry stressed elimination of corruption for the economic uplift of the country.

Chaudhry Ashraf said the country was facing a host of problems including load shedding, inflation and fragile economy. He said Kalabagh Dam was a political issue and it should be sorted out through mutual consensus, adding that the dam would not only generate cheap hydro electricity but would help strengthening the agricultural sector.

PML-Zia chief Ejazul Haq said the country was facing of terrorism and energy crisis and anti-state elements were hatching conspiracies to destabilise Pakistan.

“India has set up 14 consulates in Afghanistan where agents of RAW, Mossad and CIA are active against Pakistan,” he claimed.

Asadur Rehman said his party's government had devised a comprehensive policy to lift the growth rate from 3 percent to 7 percent by 2015-16. He said inflation would also be brought down to a single digit while the fiscal deficit would be reduced from over 7 percent to 4 percent.

Ali Gohar Khan Mehr urged the government to ensure development of Gothki district, which had been providing 40 percent of gas to the country.

Muzammil Qureshi stressed the need for putting a ban on the screening of foreign TV dramas and films to save the local industry.

Friday, 27 July 2012

27-07-2012 | Pakistan Today
ISLAMABAD - Former chief of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen (retd) Asad Durrani has submitted documents to the Supreme Court including a list of officers alleged to have illegally distributed money to politicians in the 1990 elections.
A three-member bench of the SC, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, has taken up a 1996 petition of Tehrik-i-Istiqlal chief Air Martial (retd) Asghar Khan who accused the ISI of financing politicians in the 1990 elections by dishing out Rs140 million to create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and prevent Benazir Bhutto’s PPP from winning the polls.
Durrani was asked by the court to submit the list he had promised containing the names of ISI officials involved in the operation to substantiate the doling out of funds among different politicians.
Submitting his written reply in the Supreme Court pertaining to distribution of money among the politicians to influence general elections against PPP, Asad Durrani stated that he had received money from the then Army Chief Mirza Aslam Baig.
The former chief spy claims that the names of politicians were obtained from the Presidency through Ijlal Haider Zaidi, a member of then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan’s election team, while the “donations” were doled out to the politicians at the directions of then Army Chief Mirza Aslam Beg.
The money was distributed on the behest of former president Ghulam Ishaq Kahn as he had appointed Jalal Haider Zaidi for this purpose.
Durrani claimed that some Rs 70m out of the Rs 140m were distributed through him while the remaining amount was submitted to the ISI’s secret funds. Durrani further said that all the officers who had distributed the funds belonged to the Military Intelligence (MI).
The apex court is to take up the case again in its next hearing on July 30.

Delivered cash from ISI to Nawaz myself: Younis Habib

Sunday, 11 March 2012

11-03-2012
KARACHI: In another startling revelation, former Mehran Bank chief Younis Habib Saturday claimed that he delivered money by his hand to Pakistan Muslim League Chief Nawaz Sharif at his home.
Talking to senior anchor Hamid Mir in 'Capital Talk' programme, Younis Habib said Rs2.5 million were also sent to Shahbaz Sharif through Telegraphic Transfer (TT) on September 27, 1993.
Habib further revealed that Aftab Sherpao was given a bigger amount so that he brings sizeable deposits to Mehran Bank.
He said in order to make up for mistakes committed in 1990, he extended support in 1993 to Pakistan People's Party and it came to power again that year.
The man on wheelchair said in 1993 he once again used money and weakened Nawaz Sharif's vote position by pitting Maulvis against him.
He said the money paid to the politicians was nothing less than a bribe (Rishwat), admitting that taking or giving bribe was a sin. "Bribe leaves no trace behind," he added.
Younis Habib said in 1990, he was pressurized to arrange money 'by hook or by crook' to be disbursed among politicians. He said it was not possible to arrange that kind of money in a legal way so he had to commit manipulation.
He was assured that ways would be discovered to get the money returned to the bank in future.
Younis Habib warned bankers to always keep a distance from 'army, a politician and a bureaucrat'.

PTI Chief Imran Khan met Cameron Munter in the presence of ISI chief

Monday, 21 November 2011

LONDON: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was recently introduced to Cameron Munter, American Ambassador to Pakistan, in the presence of General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the ISI chief, according to sources, The Sunday Times reported. Imran Khan is said to have gained the backing of the country’s powerful security establishment, which has grown tired of the corruption pervading the two traditional political groupings, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), led by President Asif Ali Zardari, and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), led by Nawaz Sharif, a former prime minister.

Although they do not publicly admit to favouring any party, it is an open secret that the military leadership, and the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), are backing Imran Khan’s campaign, said The Sunday Times report.

A senior official confirmed that he had the support of the army, but said his rise would cause more political damage to Sharif, the opposition leader and an outspoken military critic, than to the ruling PPP.

Others view Imran Khan as a third force to break the dominance of Pakistan’s two largest parties. “Perhaps they think he will bring about cleaner and better-quality politics and put fresh life into the country,” said Talat Masood, a retired general. “The military are perturbed by the economy because that affects defence spending.”

Imran Khan is reluctant to criticise the military establishment publicly, but he emphasises that he will not be a puppet of the generals. “Obviously you have to work with them but it doesn’t mean you have to work under them,” he told The Times.

Nawaz Sharif’s PML claimed last week that “hidden hands” were propping Imran Khan up and threatened to trigger early elections by provoking mass resignations from the parliament. The perils of upsetting the army were made clear this week when Husain Haqqani, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Washington, was forced to offer his resignation after the leak of a memo allegedly sent by the civilian government in May to American officials, asking for help to prevent a coup. Many analysts believe Haqqani, who is unpopular with the military, was made a scapegoat.

Reports that several generals had snubbed a state banquet before tense meetings with Zardari added to speculation that the PPP has fallen from favour with the military. Despite his popularity, many Pakistanis remain unconvinced that Imran Khan has the political experience to win an election. Several newspapers have also questioned his ability to lead the country, with some describing his policies as naive.

“I think it’s more a vote of no confidence (in the government) than of confidence in Khan,” said General Mahmud Ali Durrani, a former national security adviser.Imran Khan himself attributes his rising fortunes to the public’s frustration with their dishonest leaders. “In recent years, never have the people of Pakistan faced such corruption, lawlessness, lack of governance — it’s total chaos,” he said in an interview last week.

“In the beginning people could not connect corruption at the highest levels with poverty and their own situation. Today people have connected it. People realise that unemployment, poverty, inflation are all because of the corruption of the ruling elite.”

The PTI chief has pledged that if he wins power, he will make all politicians declare their assets and start paying taxes. “The reason why Pakistan is bankrupt today is because we have the lowest ratio of tax to gross domestic product and we have the highest amount of corruption,” he said.

A combination of his charisma and the public’s frustration with both mainstream parties drew a crowd estimated at up to 200,000 to a rally in Lahore last month, one of the largest Pakistan has seen.

Describing the event as a “mini-revolution” and the start of a political “tsunami”, Imran Khan said he was confident that the crowds would be even larger at his next rally in Karachi. “People are looking for change,” he said.
