Flip-Flop: PTI offers conditional support to PML-N

Friday, 13 January 2012

DAWN NEWS
LAHORE, Jan 12: The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf has made a conditional offer to the PML-N for making joint efforts for the removal of the PPP government.
Party Chairman Imran Khan told the media here on Thursday his party was ready to talk to the PML-N provided its MPs resigned from the elected houses.
PTI senior vice-president Ijaz Chaudhry told Dawn the party would discuss various offers of talks and its strategy in its central executive council meeting scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow).
Mr Chaudhry said there were no two opinions and all the opposition parties would be and should be unanimous on the Option No 6 given by the Supreme Court the other day to the government for taking recourse to the electorate.
However, he said, the parties should demonstrate their sincerity with the early polls by saying goodbye to the present houses.
Earlier, speaking at a press conference and at a ceremony, where many former MPAs joined his party, Mr Khan said themasses would distribute sweets on the `political martyrdom` of the government which was just focusing on how to protect its wealth collected through `corrupt practices and plunder` Those who joined the party included ex-ministers Aleem Khan and Irshad Sethi, ex-MNA Riffat Kahloon, ex-MPAs Shoaib Siddiqui, Mansha Sandhu, Iftikhar Bhangu, Chaudhry Talib and Mian Asghar.
PTI`s central leaders Ijaz Chaudhry, Khursheed Kasuri, Jehangir Tareen, Punjab president Ahsan Rashid and Lahore vice-president Asif Bashir were also present.
Imran Khan said the government was left with only one option to come out of the present crisis: writing to Swiss courts as directed by the Supreme Court and immediately announcing an interim setup for holding transparent and fair elections.
He said the PTI would not become part of the interim government. He warned if the PPP-led coalition government attempted to assault the judiciary, the PTI along with like-minded parties would come on roads to resist the move.
Ruling out talks with the PML-N and the JUI-F without resignation by their MPs from assemblies, he alleged both Nawaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman were proficient in political summersaults and could not be trusted.
He recalled that Mr Sharif had twice deceived them first by violating the defunct All-Party Democratic Movement (APDM) decision of boycotting the 2008 polls and then ending the long march without taking onboard other parties.
He said the PML-N on the one hand was declaring the present government corrupt and demanding immediate polls to get rid of the rulers and on the other it was protecting the present assemblies.
He questioned if the PML-N wanted dissolution of the present assemblies, why its MPs were not resigning from their seats.
He said all those parties that took part in the `NROed` 2008 polls were also responsible for the present situation in the country.

During the meeting Dasti informed Talpur about his reservations regarding Hina Rabbani Khar who he had said was the reason behind his decision to leave the party.
Dasti, who had announced his resignation from the party and the assembly on Wednesday, announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing his resignation.
Blaming Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar for his decision, Dasti had announced that he has quit the PPP and will be resigning from the NA. Dasti had said he will not be joining any political party and will contest elections independently in the future.
He had lashed out at Khar and alleged that she had taken over Muzaffargarh – his constituency – and everything “was being done according to her will”. He added that Khar had never even visited her constituency.

Imran's U-Turn: NAB-infected ex-IG joins Imran's PTI

Saturday, 24 December 2011

The News
ISLAMABAD: With recruitment of ‘political tourists’ in progress, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf has now opened its arms even to NAB-infected individuals, a textbook approach of Pervez Musharraf.

Chairman PTI, Imran Khan, has taken a U-turn by accepting in party ranks a former Inspector General Police (IGP), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Malik Naveed Ahmad, who has one corruption reference and two inquiries pending with National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Ironically welcoming Naveed in the party, Imran said: “the days of plunderers were numbered,” according to a press release issued by the former. Incidentally, Naveed has been introduced into the PTI by the party’s head of scrutiny committee in KP, Rustam Shah Mehmand, who told The News that Naveed enjoyed good reputation, an assertion disputed by majority of party leaders in the provincial chapter. Naveed’s corruption cases, is an easy general-knowledge question for everybody living in Peshawar, Rustam’s hometown.

Rustam, a former bureaucrat and an upright man by his own right, however, acknowledged before The News that ‘circumstances have taken over the work of scrutiny committee’ as it is difficult to verify everybody’s credentials given the pace of joining by all and sundry.

This whole drama is a reminiscent of the early days of Musharraf, ex-military ruler, who announced showing zero tolerance to corruption. He was so determined that the first raid was conducted at Chaudhrys’ of Gujrat residence, and their servants were maltreated by armymen for putting up resistance.

Musharraf not only backtracked later, he also sought telephonic apology from Chaudhry Shujaat when he was advised by Tariq Aziz, his point-man and then close friend of Chaudhrys, said a knowledgeable person.

PTI leadership seems to be on the same course. Naveed’s joining PTI has raised manyeyebrows even within the party. Background conversation with PTI’s KP chapter leaders reveals they were caught by surprise over this move. “He slipped in through Rustam Shah Mehmand”, said one of them, a fact acknowledged by Rustam.

Naveed has been accused of embezzlement in procurement of arms/bullet-proof jackets for KP police, a project of Rs26 billion. In addition, he is being inquired for assets beyond known means and one corruption reference is pending with NAB in which he was granted bail from an accountability court but NAB went into appeal against the decision in Peshawar High Court that has been accepted for hearing.

Naveed was accused in this reference of making 500 illegal recruitments in Frontier Constabulary (FC) allegedly for financial purposes. Naveed was Commandant FC before assuming the charge of KP police chief in March 2008. The FC recruitments were made in 2006 when 750 candidates cleared the test but 1246 were inducted and all this happened allegedly under the directions of Malik Naveed, then Commandant FC.

Regarding probe into procurement scam, a well-placed NAB official in KP told The News that the inquiry has been finalized. Chairman NAB who visited Peshawar a couple of days ago, has been asked to sign the inquiry into corruption reference for trial of former IGP and accomplices, the official further said. A separate inquiry into Naveed’s assets beyond known means has not been completed yet, according to the senior NAB official involved in all three cases.

As he announced joining PTI, Naveed said: “only Imran Khan could steer the country out of crisis.”

Iftikhar Gillani, a former law minister, was another prominent person joining PTI couple of days ago together with Naveed. Both hail from Kohat. Gillani is also being touted as ‘electable’ though he won once in lifetime and long ago. He started political career from PPP, later joined PML-Q but went into political hibernation after losing election, only to resurface now.

Majority of the people joining PTI, are former Q-Leaguers and dubbed as ‘political tourists’ by Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi. The likes of Dr. Shehzad Waseem and others have also joined PTI recently. More they come; more they frustrate party veterans and workers alike. A remark by the PTI leader who previously served at an important position and is known for vocalizing concerns is quite instructive: “Even pimps and bootleggers are also joining our party.”

U Turn Master: Imran plans to challenge ECP's decision on dual nationals

Thursday, 22 December 2011

ISLAMABAD: As the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) enforces laws against dual nationality holders – barring them from contesting elections – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday pledged to challenge the decision.
But a top legal mind of his party says, “There are no legal grounds for him to challenge the ECP’s decision.”
The ECP in light of article 63-1(c) of the Constitution declared: a person is disqualified from being a member of parliament if he/she ceases to be a citizen of Pakistan or acquired citizenship of any other country.
“We will request the ECP to review its decision,” Imran Khan said at a press conference. “Our legal team is working on it.
“Overseas Pakistanis are the backbone of our economy and are contributing billions of dollars annually in the form of remittances.
“They should be treated equally,” Khan said, pledging to fight for the rights of expatriate Pakistanis.
Meanwhile, PTI Legal Wing chief Hamid Khan said that he will brief Khan on the issue soon. He was of the view that challenging this decision in the ECP or any other court will prove to be very complicated. However, he refused to elaborate.
“The government is working on a summary, seeking changes in the laws to make mandatory for the candidates that they do not have foreign nationality,” Law Minister Maula Bakhsh Chandio informed the National Assembly.
“It [summary] will be finalised before the Senate elections being held in March next year,” he added.
Senior Supreme Court lawyer Syed Zafar Ali Shah said that it was a constitutional requirement that dual nationality holders not be members of parliament.
“If somebody wants to change it then he/she will have to go for the amendments in the Constitution. Parliament is the only way to amend such laws with a two-thirds majority,” he told More PTI incoming
Responding to a question, the PTI chairman welcomed the Sindh High Court’s (SHC) verdict pertaining to his rally in Karachi on December 25.
The SHC on Wednesday rejected a petition against PTI’s rally at the Quaid’s mausoleum, saying that the permission could only be granted by the mausoleum’s administration itself.
“We respect the SHC’s order about the Karachi rally,” Khan said.
Meanwhile, former law minister Iftikhar Gilani of the Pakistan Peoples Party, former narcotics minister Khawaja Muhammad Khan Hoti of the Awami National Party and former provincial minister from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Iftikhar Khattak formally announced to work with the PTI.
Saad Butter, son of Justice (retd) Javed Butter and an elder son of Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan of Tehreek-i-Istaqlal, also announced to join Khan’s burgeoning party.
Malik Mehboob Khar, an influential figure from Muzaffargarh also joined the party. To a question, MNA Azam Hoti said that he had sent his resignation to National Assembly Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi through an email earlier this month.
“If anyone has objections, I will personally visit his/her office for submission of my resignation,” he said.
