Zardari purchases 2-kanal house for PPP Secretariat

Tuesday, 4 February 2014

05-02-2014 | Dawn
LAHORE: In an interesting political development, former president Asif Ali Zardari has bought a two-kanal house for the Pakistan People’s Party Punjab Secretariat in the neighbourhood of the PML-N’s provincial headquarters in Model Town.

The Model Town house in C Block has been bought in the name of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Bakhtawar Bhutto and Assefa Bhutto. The Sharifs own the PML-N Secretariat in H Block (Model Town).

The PPP leadership has now decided to shift its provincial headquarters from Faisal Town to Model Town. “The old secretariat in Faisal Town will be used for seven other wings of the party,” PPP Punjab President Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo.

The PPP, which received drubbing in the general election in Punjab, has been in financial crunch for quite some time. It had acquired the Model Town office on rent before the election. A notice to vacate the house was served on the party when it did not pay the rent for a couple of months. It even had no money to pay the salaries of the employees there as well as those of Faisal Town.

The situation was brought to the knowledge of Asif Ali Zardari who not only directed some ‘rich’ party members including Wattoo to donate (to the party funds) but also sent the amount from his pocket to buy the Model Town office.

Manzoor Wattoo said the PPP had bought the new secretariat out of its funds. He confirmed that it had been purchased in the name of Bilawal, Bakhtawar and Assefa.

Bilawal, who is scheduled to arrive in the provincial capital within a month or so, may not visit the new secretariat because of security concerns. He usually stays in the bomb-proof Bilawal House at Bahria Town. Property tycoon Malik Riaz had got it built for Mr Zardari and members of his family. Zardari claims he had bought the Bilawal House (from Riaz).

Fawad Chaudhry, media adviser to Bilawal, said Mr Bilawal would arrive in Lahore by the end of this month or early next month and have meetings with the party workers especially the youth. Bilawal believes threats cannot deter him from engaging in political activities.

Shi’ite protesters ostracize the PTI team — Report

Thursday, 23 January 2014

24-01-2014 | Dawn
LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leaders on Thursday faced embarrassment when the participants of the sit-in outside the Governor’s House did not allow them to join the protest for having “soft corner” for the Taliban.

A large number of people, including women and children, had camped outside the Governor’s House since 5pm on Wednesday under the umbrella of the Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) and Imamia Students Organisation to protest against the killing of Shia pilgrims in Balochistan’s Mastung district.

The participants were determined to continue with the protest till stern action against militants involved in the attacks is not initiated.

The charged participants seemed to have drawn a line between those having soft corner for the extremists and the ones who are against them.

As no one from the PML-N or the Punjab government bothered to express solidarity with the participants of the sit-in, the PTI leaders – Ejaz Chaudhry and Andleep Abbas – visited them.

However, the protesters asked the PTI leaders that they should better leave as “we don’t need sympathy from those who support the Taliban.” A group of the participants tried to convince others to let the PTI leaders sit with them but to no avail.

The same situation did not arise when the PPP leaders – Jehangir Badr and Manzoor Wattoo – reached there. “Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had given a message for you! We will not surrender before terrorists,” Wattoo told the participants.
“We demand that the PML-N government bring all assailants to justice,” he said.

On the other hand, the MWM leaders said they would not end the protest in Lahore till the relatives of those killed in Quetta ended the sit-in there.

The MWM leaders - Allama Ahmad Iqbal Rizvi, Allama Imtiaz Kazmi, Allama Syed Jaffer Mousavi, Allama Syed Mubarak Ali Mousavi, Allama Syed Husain Najfi, Allama Husnain Arif and Syed Asad Abbas Naqvi – also addressed the protesters. They demanded that the government launch a “targeted military operation” in Quetta to hunt down the terrorists.

The motorists in the provincial capital faced great inconvenience because of more than 30-hour sit-in on The Mall.

The participants, especially elderly women and children, showed no sign of withdrawal despite cold weather.

“Soon after coming from school I had a lunch and then my father brought me here. He told me that we have come here to register protest against the killing of innocent people in Quetta,” Komail Raza, a grade-III student, told Dawn at the sit-in.

“I would attend my school tomorrow though I will go to bed late. I think my presence may force the rulers to arrest the killers of the innocent people,” Komail said.

Transparency raises questions about Rs5 bn Bilawal House in Lahore

Thursday, 14 February 2013

14-02-2013 | The News
ISLAMABAD: The newly constructed 200-kanal palace in Bahria Town Lahore named Bilawal House, said to be worth Rs5 billion and allegedly gifted to the President of Pakistan, has come under severe criticism from Transparency International.

TIP, in a letter to the Supreme Court, NAB and many other organisations, has asked how the president can receive the ‘gift’, as no government servant can accept any gift while in service. The spokesman of Bahria Town, Col (retd) Khalil when contacted said it was not in his knowledge and only Malik Riaz can reveal the actual situation. Malik Riaz Hussain could not be contacted for comments.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, the chairman National Accountability Bureau, the chairman Public Accounts Committee and the federal minister of finance have also been sent letters by the Transparency International regarding 200-kanal palace allegedly gifted to the president just ahead of the general election.

Transparency International Pakistan has referred to the following international and national press reports:

1. That after building a Bilawal House in Karachi, now the president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari is going to ceremoniously open a Bilawal House in Lahore’s Bahria Town as well. And according to the sources the house is worth Rs5 billion.

2. That it is reported that this house is probably a gift for PPP president from Malik Riaz, who is the owner of Bahria Town.

3. That with one in Karachi, President Asif Ali Zardari will inaugurate another Bilawal House in Bahria Town Lahore on Saturday.

4. That sources told that the house located in popular Bahria Town Lahore having worth of Rs5 billion, is a bullet-proof bungalow built on over 200 kanals of land.

5. That the house carries a runway for landing of private jets.

6. That sources quoted as saying that the house will be gift to PPP president from Malik Riaz, the owner of Bahria Town.”

“The press reports have not been denied by anyone, and it is therefore assumed that the reports of Rs5 billion house built by Malik Riaz and gifted to President Asif Ali Zardari are correct. Transparency International Pakistan would like to inform the president that according to the Rules and Instructions relating to the Conduct of Government Servants, Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1964 Section 5 (1) quoted below, gifts shall not be accepted. 5. Gifts: (1) Save as otherwise provided in this rule, no government servant shall, except with the previous sanction of the government, accept, or permit any member of his family to accept, from any person any gift the receipt of which will place him under any form of official obligation to the donor. If, however, due to very exceptional reasons, a gift cannot be refused, the same may, under intimation to the Cabinet Division, be kept for official use in the Department or Organisation in which he is working.”

Transparency International Pakistan has requested the secretary general to the president to process the gift of Rs5 Billion House at Bahria Town Lahore to be transferred to the government of Pakistan if the news reports are correct.

On the other side, PTI Punjab's steering committee member Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed said, the stance of election commission is not veristic and it doesn’t possess ground reality. PTI youth wing forms faction against PTI's Lahore president

Sunday, 22 April 2012

22-04-2012
LAHORE - Itched by apparently not-so-good performance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Lahore Region President Mahmadur Rasheed, leaders of party’s youth wing have formed a strong faction against him.
Some of workers of the Youth Wing say that newly inducted leaders are trying to hijack the party which could harm the PTI.
In a letter to the central committee members including Arif Alvi, Hamid Khan, Ahsan Rasheed and Mian Azhar they opined, “Nepotism in PTI is intolerable and if you ignore our opinion we will do the same with you”.
After application, amendments have been made in steering committees of PTI Punjab, the youth members said. The total number of members in Central Punjab Committee is 18, in West Punjab Committee there are 17 members, in North Punjab Committee there are 13 members and in Southern Punjab Committee there are 19 members.
The youth wing also criticized PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi on inducting only his loyals and ignoring Central Vice President of the party Ejaz Chaudhry.
The youth wing complained that the Lahore region’s president was converting party into a family party at Lahore level.
“He is inducting his relatives in the party and was lobbying for party ticket,” they noted.
So far the youth wing has conducted four meetings against various party leaders at Bagh-e-Jinnah, a local hotel, residence of Abdul Rasheed Bhatti and a place at Jail Road in which up to 600 party workers took part. Some party insiders view that the PTI vice chairman is interested in leading the youth wing and for this purpose he is supporting central committee’s member Mian Abdul Aleem. Similarly, other main leaders of PTI are also trying to get support of the youth wing, disturbing party affairs in Punjab. But so far the wing has not decided to favour any particular leader.

Friday, 9 December 2011

10th Dec 2011   The Express Tribune
LAHORE: What was at one point considered target killing of a journalist, has turned out to be murder for monetary reasons as police claimed to have arrested the killer of The London Post journalist, Faisal Qureshi, on Friday.
Qureshi, a columnist for the “The London Post” had been butchered under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Lahore’s Johar Town on October 7, 2011. At the time Police had registered a case against unknown assailants on the application of his brother, Zahid Ahmad Qureshi, also a journalist in Britain.
Zahid Qureshi had alleged at the time that the murder was a target killing carried out by the MQM because his brother was said to be an ardent critic of the party.
On Friday, police announced the arrest of Faisal Hameed Qureshi, a childhood friend of The London Post columnist. Police further alleged that Qureshi had killed the journalist for monetary gains.
The accused Hameed Qureshi allegedly confessed to the police that he had murdered his friend because he was in dire need of funds to pay another friend, Ishtiaq Ahmad, whose motorbike had been stolen while in Hameed Qureshi’s possession.
Police, who had arrested the accused on account of suspicion, said that during his confession, Hameed Qureshi revealed that in order to pay back Ahmad, he had borrowed Rs20,000 from his brother. Though still short of the required sum, Hameed Qureshi decided to murder his old friend, whom he considered well off with residence in a posh area.
Hameed Qureshi said that after allegedly murdering the victim, he changed his clothes, and threw the knife (murder weapon) and the blood stained clothes in a canal near Doctor’s Hospital. Following his deed, Hameed Qureshi used The London Post journalist’s ATM card to withdraw Rs20,000. The victim had given Hameed Qureshi the PIN code of his card before being killed, police said, pointing to numbers scratched into a wall at the scene of the crime.
Hameed Qureshi then paid Rs15,000 to Ishtiaq Ahmad, promising him the rest of the payments soon.
