لاہور میں میڈیا سے بات کرتے ہوئے شیخ رشید نے کہا کہ اگر کسی نے 13 اگست کی رات کو پرچم لہرایا تو آب پارہ تھانے میں اس کے خلاف مقدمہ درج کراؤں گا۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ ہماری خواہش ہے کہ قوم لوڈشیڈنگ اور کرپٹ لیڈروں سے نجات حاصل کرے جبکہ اگر ہماری تحریک کو بھی روکا گیا تو چاروں صوبائی اسمبلیوں کے سامنے دھرنا دیں گے۔

شیخ رشید نے کہا کہ جب قوم سڑکوں پر ہوگی تو ایم  کیوایم بھی نائن زیرو میں نہیں بیٹھے گی کیونکہ مجھے الطاف حسین سے پوری امید ہے کہ وہ لوگوں کا مزاج سمجھتے ہیں اور حق کا ساتھ دیں گے جب کہ طاہرالقادری بھی عنقریب اپنے شیڈول کا اعلان کرنے والے ہیں ۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ اسلام آباد میں 3 ماہ کے لئے آرٹیکل 245 لگا کر فوج بلانے والے خود اس کے ذمہ دار ہوں گے۔

Altaf Hussain suspends senior party member

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) today suspended the membership of a senior party member for mistreating a delegation of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) during Sunday’s rally.

In an emergency meeting held at Jinnah Park immediately after the public rally, MQM’s Rabita Committee unanimously decided to suspend Qamar Mansoor, one of the senior most members, for showing an irresponsible behavior with the PFUJ’s delegation.

It said that Mansoor would remain suspended for an indefinite period.

MQM head Altaf Hussain, while endorsing the committee’s decision, regretted the unfortunate incident.

He later spoke to PFUJ President, General Secretary and other members by phone and apologized for Mansoor’s conduct.

IISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif might have finally decided to change the longest standing Governor of Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and summoned former Chief Minister of Sindh Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim for discussion.

According to the source privy to former CM, Nawaz Sharif asked Rahim to meet him in Islamabad on Tuesday, May 13.

Confirming the invitation, the spokesperson of Arbab Ghulam Rahim stated that all issues related to Sindh would be discussed in the meeting.

Source categorically mentioned that possible governor replacement in Sindh would also become the topic of discussion.

Arbab Ghulam Rahim in Sindh

Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim remained the Chief Minister of Sindh from the platform of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) from 2002 on wards. However, later he joined PML-N and contested the election. He is the sitting member of Sindh Assembly but at present not appearing in the proceedings at all.

Arbab, when in office, mentioned that woman’s rule for Pakistan is a curse. He was believed to be referring towards Benazir Bhutto who was alive at that time.

Moreover, after the 2008 elections when Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) formed government in Sindh and on the first day of assembly Arbab was attacked with shoe when he came to Sindh Assembly.

Even in current assembly, fearing victimization, Arbab Ghulam Rahim had submitted leave application with speaker of Sindh Assembly due to his crucial overseas stay.

MQM and PML-N

Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) is the largest political party in Karachi and Sindh’s urban areas. Although MQM supported PML-N’s candidate in presidential election but now it has politically wed PPP in Sindh after joining the coalition.

The present Governor of Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan was first appointed by former president General (rtd) Pervez Musharraf. He is the only longest standing Governor any province of Pakistan ever saw. Ebad has public and announced political affiliation with MQM.

London: Saleem Shahzad’s house ‘under-attack’

LONDON: The house of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s former senior leader Saleem Shahzad has been attacked in London by four men, it can be revealed. Sources have confirmed to this scribe that four men attacked the house in London’s Mill Hill area where Saleem Shahzad has been living with his wife and daughters for several years now.

Saleem Shahzad, who is now in Dubai, was not in London at the time of the attack when the four men approached the house at 6 o clock in the evening on Saturday 12th of April, 2014.

The sources told that the attackers first searched the car of Saleem Shahzad’s family, went around the house. The attackers then banged the doors and windows of the house using a metal bar.

The sources confirmed that the attackers forcibly tried to open the main door but failed to make their way in. Shahzad’swife and daughters were present in the house at the time of the attack and they immediately called the police.

It’s not clear at this stage whether any damage was caused to the property or anyone was injured also but Saleem Shahzad’s family has been given a crime reference number and the local police are investigating.

It’s in the same neighbourhood where the MQM’s estranged leader Dr Imran Farooq was killed on 16 September 2010 outside his house by two men who are in Pakistan’s unannounced custody.

فروغ نسیم نے کہا کہ سنگین غداری کیس میں دلائل کے دوران اکرم شیخ کو الطاف حسین سے متعلق بات  نہیں کرنی چاہیئے تھی، الطاف حسین تو اکرم شیخ سے متعلق اچھے جذبات رکھتے ہیں، اگلی سماعت کے دوران اپنی باری پر وہ الطاف حسین کا نام لینے پر ضرور بات کریں گے۔

Saleem Shahzad hits back after MQM suspends him

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s former senior leader Saleem Shahzad has announced that he will expose the corruption that allegedly exists within the party and will make important disclosure in this regard.

Speaking to The News from Dubai over telephone after the MQM suspended his basic party membership, Saleem Shahzad said that the party leadership was already aware that he had decided to resign from the basic membership of the party.

The MQM said in an announcement that Saleem Shahzad has been suspended for violating “party discipline” and made it clear that the party didn’t have anything “directly or indirectly with the business dealings of Saleem Shahzad”. The MQM stated that the veteran leader’s membership has been suspended for “indefinite period”.

Saleem Shahzad was sidelined by the MQM along with several senior leaders including Raza Haroon, Anees Advocate, Anis qaimkhani and others following the general elections in May last year. Saleem Shahzad then left for Duabi where has been working in the real estate sector for a local businessman. He has no property or business interests in London and it is believed that his family lives in a property owned by the MQM.

Saleem Shahzad revealed: “I had informed the party about my decision to resign from the basic membership of the party and to separate myself completely from the party. There is a corrupt lobby within the MQM that has been against the diehard ideological workers like myself who helped found the party and remained loyal to it through all kinds of tribulations. These elements are involved in extortions, killings, smuggling and lawlessness. I have a long list of what I am going to expose before the nation in coming days. I will reveal names of the money-making mafia,” the former Rabita committee member said.

Saleem Shahzad, who worked with Altaf Hussain since the foundation of the party as a student group and has served in some of the most senior positions, said he will “expose those who have made billions using the platform of the MQM through deception and without any accountability in the party”.

He said “corruption” within the MQM has become a serious issue and he will do everything to “expose those who are in the party not for ideology but to make money at any cost and to mislead the party leadership”.

When asked if he plans to form his own party or join an established party, Saleem Shahzad said he would reach London soon where he would make important decisions after meeting his trusted colleagues. Saleem Shahzad has been suspended from the party quite a few times in the past but this time the parting of ways seems to be permanent and there is every sign that Saleem Shahzad is not going to ask for a reconciliation or mediation with the party leadership. “Enough is enough,” he declared.

Afaq Ahmed likely to tie-up with Muttahida Qaumi Movement

Twisting reports are surfacing that Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) head — Afaq Ahmed is all set to tie-up with Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

The news agency of private TV network has claimed that Haqiqi’s Afaq is likely to join MQM (formerly known as, Mohajir Qaumi Movement). The host, Kamran Shahid disclosed that Mr Ahmed has submitted his pardon application to Altaf Hussain at London secretariat.

MQM’s representative, Faisal Subzwari mentioned that he has no sufficient information regarding joining of Afaq. Further he hinted that the politics of MQM is not based on rigidity, and personal enmity like feudal mindsets.

Afaq’s prime companion, Amir Khan has already tied a knot with Muttahida Qaumi Movement after granting his pardon.

Vice chairman Shamshad Ghauri had announced in 2012, “The Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-H) is ready to sit down with its archrival, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), if the need arises”.

Karachi: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has decided to set up its own neighbourhood watch committees as it fears a backlash from the militants.

As talks between the government and the Taliban negotiators dwindle, the party has ordered its leaders, parliamentarians, units and sectors representatives to help form neighbourhood committees in the city and to report any suspicious activity or person.

While ‘appeals’ to residents had been made earlier to form vigilant teams, MQM leaders said that the current situation made them take up this call once again. The party believes that their strongholds are vulnerable targets as they are on the hit list for being secular and vocal against militants. “Around one-third of the city is under the presence of militants,” said one MQM leader. “But we will defend and save Karachi in case they do any damage.”

Meanwhile, the party’s deputy convener, Nasir Jamal said that an awareness campaign has been started where residents have been asked to form committees and take up the responsibility of their own protection. They will keep an eye on who is living in their areas and what activities they are involved in.

The party’s parliamentarians are also pushing people in their constituencies to do the same. In MNA Ali Raza Abidi’s constituency of NA- 251, a 20-person committee has been formed to oversee 600 houses in Mehmoodabad No. 5. The area’s unit office is helping out as well.

Resident committees, which might not necessarily comprise MQM supporters or workers, are hiring unemployed youngsters of the area as watch guards. Residents are pooling in money to give financial support as well. “They have been told strictly to keep records of house owners in the locality, the houses being rented out and information on tenants,” explained Abidi. “This is a self-initiative and those people in the committee will not be armed.”

Abidi added that the committee will not bother the law enforcement agencies but will keep them in the loop if they come across any suspicious activity. Smaller committees are also being formed on street level. “We are preparing people to be mentally ready, so that they have immediate numbers and information of who to get in touch when the need arises.”

Korangi’s parliamentarian Ali Rashid told The Express Tribune that a door-to-door awareness campaign is also taking place in his locality to mobilise people in case of a backlash. “These committees will facilitate the law enforcement agencies in providing information and intelligence,” he said. “This does not mean that we will take the law in our own hands,” he clarified. Rashid said that the committee set-up will be difference in every locality since every place has its own dynamics.

On the other hand, police officers have called for inclusion in the committee. A police officer, who is part of a police station where a committee has been formed, said that the police should be made a member of the committee so that they can immediately tackle terrorists. There should be strong coordination between the two, he urged.

Imran Farooq case — Mystery of Khalid Shamim

ISLAMABAD: Mystery continues to shroud the whereabouts of an MQM leader Khalid Shamim who went missing from Karachi three years ago on January 5, 2011, roughly three months after the puzzling murder of Dr Imran Farooq in September 2010.

Despite repeated directives in the past three years, first from the Sindh High Court, and then from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, to recover and produce the missing MQM leader, the Karachi police have simply failed to locate Khalid Shamim, who has already been linked to the high-profile murder case of Dr Imran Farooq by the Scotland Yard.

According to Beena Khalid, wife of Khalid Shamim, her husband was whisked away in two cars bearing official registration number plates by the personnel of intelligence agencies on the night of January 5, 2011. At the time of the incident, he was getting money from an ATM in Malir Halt area of Karachi while his family was sitting in the car, waiting for his return.

Beena, who had first approached the Sindh High Court and then the Supreme Court seeking recovery of her husband, says the abduction was witnessed by many people but no one came to his rescue.

Despite Khalid Shamim’s known links with the MQM, Beena insists that her husband, who is an accountant with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, was neither involved in any criminal activity nor affiliated with a political party.

But even then, she alleges, her husband had been picked up in connection with Imran Farooq’s murder. In a constitutional petition filed with the Sindh High Court seeking the recovery of Khalid Shamim, Beena annexed transcripts of news telecast by different television channels and clippings from newspapers, linking her husband’s arrest to the September 2010 murder. But after several hearings, the court was finally informed that Khalid was neither in the custody of any Pakistani law enforcement agency nor has he been handed over to any foreign agency.

Beena Khalid subsequently approached the Supreme Court, with the then Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry taking up her petition on August 31, 2013 and directing the Inspector General of Sindh Police to recover and produce Khalid Shamim as early as possible. But there has been no progress in the case since then, although the Scotland Yard continues to make headway in the murder investigations of Dr Imran Farooq.

In June 2013, the British Police had arrested Iftikhar Hussain, being a suspect in the murder.

The arrest was made on the basis of the forensic evidence gathered by the British Police which stated that they have sought the Call Detail Record (CDR) along with text messages from the SIM obtained from Iftikhar Hussain.

The information obtained from the SIM of Iftikhar Hussain brought into limelight some previously unknown facts and connections which have almost solved the murder case. As per the Scotland Yard findings, Imran Farooq was killed by his political opponents.

The story goes that the then member of the National Assembly from Karachi had actually been tasked to physically eliminate Dr Imran Farooq. He subsequently assigned the job to Khalid Shamim.

Khalid sought help from Hammad Siddiqi who provided him with two henchmen who were to be dispatched to London to carry out the job. Khalid Shamim arranged student visas for both the boys — Mohsin Ali Syed and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran, recently named by BBC in its report.

Upon their arrival in London, both were briefed about Dr Imran Farooq’s routine by an unidentified man. They allegedly killed Imran soon afterwards and left for Colombo the same day instead of returning to Pakistan to mislead those investigating the case. But they were ordered by Khalid Shamim to return to Pakistan.

A secret agency reportedly recorded all conversations between Khalid and the two killers who themselves were to be eliminated upon their arrival in Karachi with a view to erase all the traces in the murder case.

The agencies detained the boys when they reached Karachi from Colombo and then made them listen the recordings of their conversations. They were quick to confess to the murder, for which they can only be charged in England and not in Pakistan. Khalid Shamim was arrested a few days later from Karachi.

However, to essentially prove that these two were “the” killers, the Scotland Yard requires their custody to carry out their DNA tests to establish whether or not they were at the scene of the assassination. Seeking from Pakistan government the custody of Mohsin Ali Syed and Kashif Khan Kamran, the Scotland Yard has informed the Pakistani authorities that they have found DNA of the two men from the crime spot besides having eye-witnesses who saw Imran being killed.

NA record changed to protect MQM MNA who beat journalist

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Secretariat, known for obsessive secrecy about the attendance of MNAs, has allegedly doctored the record of an MNA who is facing criminal charges of beating a journalist in Lahore.

The MNA was shown to be present in the assembly on the date and time when the incident took place miles away in Lahore. The forgery, likely to be established due to undeniable evidence, will not only raise serious questions about the authenticity of the NA record, it may project the assembly as a sanctuary for alleged criminals who can hide behind its wall after committing offences.

MQM MNA Tahira Asif hurled abuses at a journalist Akmal Ghumman in Lahore and then got him thrashed black and blue by her bodyguard for parking an out-of-order car near a petrol pump. Now she has dissociated herself from the incident claiming that she was present in the assembly session that day.

Although the police are reluctant to register an FIR against the sitting MNA, the telephone record they acquired from the cellular company gave credence to Akmal’s claim. The record, also shared with The News, shows that Tahira was in the range of the cellular company’s tower situated at Grace Hotel that is near the place where the brawl occurred.

Tahira confirmed to The News that the phone number (whose record was obtained) is only used by her but insisted on her presence in Islamabad that day along with the cell phone.As the police dilly-dally on registering the FIR despite a court order, Akmal, a senior producer of Radio Pakistan, has been suspended by DG Radio Samina Waqar for daring to go public on his alleged maltreatment.

The friendship of Tahira Asif and Samina Waqar dates back to their performing last year’s Hajj together that followed the suspension of Akmal. Tahira previously made headlines by slapping a Motorway Police official some years ago after he stopped her car for violating traffic rules. The cop, like Akmal, was later suspended.

Tahira was PML-Q MNA in the last assembly and later switched to MQM that returned her to parliament on a reserved seat.Incidentally, DG Radio Samina Waqar is also in the headlines these days on corruption charges relating to the alleged non-transparency in awarding contracts to her favorites.

Tahira’s clash with Akmal occurred on September 27, 2013. The incident took place at about 11a.m when Akmal’s car broke down near Shimla Hill while he was on his way to the office. As he was discussing the problem with the mechanic and turned the warning light on, a white Prado (LEC-13-356) emerged.

Tahira Asif who was inside rolled down the window glass and allegedly started rebuking Akmal for parking the car on the road. He initially sought pardon and explained the reason. As Tahira kept hurling abuses, the situation turned ugly as it followed heated exchanges from both sides. Two guards accompanying Tahira got off the Prado and started beating Akmal. His glasses broke down and he received multiple injuries on his face. The accused then issued serious threats and fled away, reads the petition Akmal filed with district and session judge praying the police be ordered to register FIR, which has not been done to date.

The incident received wide media coverage. A private TV channel flashed the news and interviewed Akmal that followed his suspension from Radio Pakistan, which punished him for going public as Tahira brought the issue to the attention of DG Radio.

DG Radio confirmed to The News the suspension of Akmal after the complaint lodged by MNA Tahira Asif. Describing the grounds of suspension, she said Akmal should not have gone on air about the incident.

Tahira Asif insisted while talking to The News that she was in Islamabad and no such incident took place. However, she confirmed that Prado and the cell phone are owned by her.
Akmal contradicted her version of the story and defended his position by producing the record of her phone number acquired by police that established her presence at that date and time in Lahore.

He challenged her to show the video footage of her presence in the assembly session in support of her claimed presence in Islamabad that day. The News also asked Tahira to get the record of her phone number determining her location in line with the assembly’s attendance record. She however refused to do so.

The News also attempted a number of times to approach the concerned officer of NA Secretariat Muhammad Mushtaq (deputy secretary legislation) but failed. The message and phone number was dropped to his staff who earlier excused that he was taking another phone call and will return the call but he did not.

KARACHI: Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Rauf Siddiqui has written a letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland Yard, condemning media trial and negative propaganda against Altaf Hussain.

In the letter, Rauf Siddiqui asked British PM Cameron that why their leader Altaf Hussain was being mentally tortured despite the fact there was no case against him.

He said they were fully cooperating with the British police in investigation in Imran Farooq murder case.

Rauf Siddiqui questioned why the MQM leaders houses were being raided despite cooperation.

Suspect re-bailed in Imran Farooq murder case

LONDON: A 52-year-old man arrested in June this year in connection with the murder case of Dr Imran Farooq has been re-bailed till March.

The suspect appeared at the police station to answer his bail on Tuesday. The suspect has been bailed for the third time.

Police say the murder investigation of the Dr Imran Farooq case continues. “We are making progress,” said a Metropolitan police spokesperson.

Money laundering: London police arrest 2 MQM associates

LONDON: The Scotland Yard supported by National Crime Agency have conducted raid in West London and arrested two MQM associates in connection with money laundering case.

The raid was conducted on Thursday during which two people associated with MQM, in their 40s and 70s, were arrested and shifted to a police station in Central London for further probe.

During the raid, police also seized a few items from the place.

LONDON: Former mayor of Karachi and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s senior leader Syed Mustafa Kamal is in Dubai and working with Malik Riaz’s Bahria Town, it is learnt. He will supervise a Bahria Town project, if approved by the Dubai government. He will then stay put in Dubai.

There are also unconfirmed reports that he has developed differences with the party. However, when Geo News correspondent in Washington Wajid Ali Syed asked former ports and shipping minister Babar Ghauri on Sunday about Mustafa Kamal and his absence from the party scene, he replied that the reports of Mustafa Kamal’s “differences with the party were untrue”.Ghauri said that he was in touch with the former Karachi mayor through “email and telephone”.

ISLAMABAD: The office of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in Karachi has been closed down after it received threats from an ethnic political party in the city, sources said on Monday.

Since the last eight to nine days the staff members of the BBC instead of working in the office have confined themselves to their houses and are working from there, sources further said. South Karachi DIG Ammer Sheikh has visited the BBC office to look into the matter. Sources further said the threats may be a reaction to the documentary on MQM chief Altaf Hussain broadcast by the BBC. The documentary sparked an unprecedented response from the MQM which termed it fake and Taliban-sponsored propaganda. Meanwhile, various journalist bodies have expressed their concern over the closure of the BBC office.
