ISLAMABAD - Masood Sharif Khattak, who on Friday formally announced to join Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaaf (PTI), was blamed for corruption in the past.
He was imprisoned in 1996 by the government of Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari for launching widespread wiretapping against government officials.
Released in 2000, he unsuccessfully contested the 2002 general elections from Karak as a Pakistan Peoples’ Party candidate. He resigned from the PPP in 2007 after he raised objections on National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO). When Benazir Bhutto signed NRO, he had written an open letter against it which was published in media. He remained member of PPP CEC for 10 years.
According to sources, Khattak was allegedly arrested along with foreign currency hidden in cases when his house was raided in Islamabad after ousting the PPP government in 1996.
Masood Sharif also tried his best to join PML-N but could not succeed as Farid Toofan and Rahmat Salam Khattak were his rivals.
