PS-114 voting assessment may dent PML-N’s position but strengthen MQM’s

Wednesday, 23 October 2013

23-10-2013
Karachi: Reports are emerging that National Database Registration Authority; NADRA’s vote verification report of PS-114 may dent PML-N’s Irfanullah Khan Marwat victory.

Sources have revealed that MQM will be the beneficiary of NADRA’s vote verification on PS-114.

Senior columnist Nusrat Javeed has tweeted, “Only 10,000 votes out of 92,000 cast have been authenticated from a Sindh assembly seat. Irfanullah Marwat won the seat on PML-N ticket.”
According to the NADRA report, 700 voters of PS-114 cast more than one votes and 378 voters do not belong to PS-114.

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), PML-N’s Marwat secured the seat by taking over 37,000 votes and Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s candidate Rauf Siddiqui was the runner up.

PS-128 re-election: PTI to support SSP’s Farooqi by not contesting polls

Friday, 7 June 2013

07-06-2013 | Dawn
KARACHI: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Sindh Assembly candidate Inayat Khattak announced here Friday announced his party's decision to boycott re-polling in Karachi’s PS-128 scheduled for Saturday.

X-Reports has unveiled that PTI and ANP, both are going to support SSP’s chief Aurangzeb Farooqi on PS-128

The decision, he said, was due to absolute disregard for PTI's demand that re-polling exercise must be undertaken in the entire constituency and not in six selected polling stations.
He said the PTI has already submitted before the Election Commission to ensure re-polling for PS-128, and that re-polling must be carried out under the surveillance of the Army.

Khattak said his party had also demanded the installation of closed-circuit cameras in the polling stations and the presence of army personnel in polling booths so as to avert any chance of rigging.

The provincial assembly’s PS-128 constituency comprises mainly of Karachi’s Quaidabad area.

According to the Election Commission’s website, PTI candidate Khattak received 3557 in polling on May 11.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Waqar Hussain Shah is in a leading position with 23,496 votes, while Aurangzaib Farooqui of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), part of the Muttahida Deeni Mahaz (MDM), trails with 21,332 votes.

Perpetrators who opened fire at PTI Teen Talwar sit-in were PTI workers

Sunday, 2 June 2013

02-06-2013
Haroon Ur Rasheed, who is a very strong supporter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seems to have been disappointed by the politics now adopted by PTI and Imran Khan. This led him to the revelation of some facts regarding PTI in his article in Roznama Dunya on Sunday, 2 June 2013.

Haroon Rasheed revealed that the two culprits who were arrested for opening fire at the sit-in of PTI at Teen Talwar, were the workers of party itself. This information came out in the investigation carried out by The Police.

This revelation has also led people to a more ominous assumption that did PTI also kill its veteran and sidelined party leader, Ms Zehra Shahid Hussain (Late).

Re-polls continue: ASWJ confident of catching up to MQM in race for PS-128

Thursday, 30 May 2013

31-05-2013 | Tribune
KARACHI: The bomb blast on May 11 in Landhi, targeting Awami National Party’s candidate Amanullah Mehsud, left out 9,547 registered voters from the electoral process. On June 8, the Election Commission of Pakistan will offer them one more chance to elect the representative of PS-128.

The re-polls could tip the scales either in favour of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement or Muttahida Deeni Mahaz (MDM) as the premature results show the former’s Waqar Hussain Shah in the lead with 23,496 votes while the latter’s Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat is behind with only 2,164 votes.

Out of 72 polling stations, the re-elections will take place only at the six stations affected by the blast on the day of elections which killed 12 people and left 30 injured. The regional election commissioner, Tanveer Zaki, said that the security arrangements for the re-polls on June 8 will be finalised soon.

According to the ECP’s polling scheme, the six polling stations – 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 – will have 24 polling booths. The stations cover the areas of Razi Market, Bismillah Colony, Tauheedabad, Dawood Chali and Firdous Chali of Landhi.
Most of the areas are Pashtun-dominated and according to the residents, ANP has a strong vote bank. The results from May 11, however, show that ANP’s candidate secured only 3,108 votes – leaving the MQM and MDM to lead the field.

Confident early winners

The frontrunner for PS-128 is confident that his winning streak will continue even after June 8. “We have already won the seat but our opponents have pressured the ECP to conduct re-elections in the six polling stations,” said Shah.
“Residents of the areas are with MQM as they need development projects. MQM, through its strong presence in the Sindh Assembly, is in a good position to work for the development of the deprived population of the constituency.”

The MQM candidate added that while he and his party activists were ready for the re-polls, they found it to be unjust as 24 per cent turnout was observed at these six polling stations on May 11. “We are in contact with the residents for votes and will emerge as winners.”

Catching up quickly

Meanwhile, the activists of ASWJ were sure that the re-polls on June 8 would provide Farooqui the upper hand to beat MQM. Farooqui, who is the ASWJ Karachi chief, is a resident of Landhi and reportedly enjoys the support of the Pashtu-speaking people and those from Hazara. According to the ASWJ spokesperson, the bomb blast on May 11 affected their votes which they expected to be over 40,000. “More than half of our voters returned to their homes without casting their votes,” said Maulana Akber Saeed, the spokesperson of ASWJ Karachi. He added that their party had already appealed for tight security arrangements in the constituency as their candidates were attacked a day before the elections.

“Activists of ASWJ who live in the area are in contact with people for votes and we hope that we will win the seat,” said Saeed. ASWJ, which contested elections from MDM’s platform, has not secured any seat in the elections as yet.

ANP might be falling behind but could still manage to damage MDM’s votes. “ANP can put Farooqui’s victory in jeopardy because all the six polling stations fall in its stronghold,” Yasir Kundi, a resident of PS-128, told The Express Tribune.

FAFEN: Punjab leads in the list of polling stations with over 100% turnout

Monday, 13 May 2013

14-05-2013 | FAFEN
ISLAMABAD, May 13, 2013 – Based on data gathered by Free and Fair Election Network observers at polling stations showing impossible voter turnout greater than 100%, FAFEN called on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to release all polling station Statements of the Count (Form XIV) to the public on its website before certifying any final election results in any constituency.

The voter turnout was more than 100% in at least 49 polling stations out of 8,119 polling stations sampled by FAFEN across Pakistan, according to Statements of the Count delivered so far by FAFEN observers.
ECP must not include votes from these polling stations in calculations of constituency election results, and should consider re-polling in these stations.

At least 32 polling stations with greater than 100% turnout were in Punjab, 10 in Sindh, six in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one in Balochistan. The polling stations with impossible voter turnout figures included 19 female polling stations, 16 male stations and 14 combined (male and female) stations.

Voter turnout is calculated on the basis of the registered voters for each polling station as given on the ECP website http://ecp.gov.pk/PollingScheme.aspx. Polling stations included in the analysis are only those in which presiding officers accurately calculated the total number of ballots as recorded on the Statement of the Count (Form XIV).

FAFEN has recommended since 2008 that ECP should void the results from any polling station where more ballots are cast than the number of registered voters, and should investigate highly improbable cases of voter turnout, such as those greater than 80%.

Best practice for election transparency requires that polling station ballot counts and vote counts should be posted as quickly as possible on the ECP website, both as scans of the original forms and in data tables that can be scrutinized. This information was made public by ECP for the first time many months after General Election 2008, based on persistent FAFEN advocacy.

PTI and PML-N spent millions into TV ads

Saturday, 4 May 2013

04-05-2013 | AFP
RAWALPINDI - As bombs curtail campaign rallies, political parties are ploughing millions of dollars into TV and print adverts to sway voters ahead of next week’s historic polls.

Competition is fierce but it’s a cash market and those with the biggest bucks get the most air time ahead of the historic May 11 general elections, set to mark a key democratic transition, say television executives on condition of anonymity.

Bursting with colour, promising to fix the nation’s myriad ills, bust corruption and bring prosperity to voters, the ‘paid content’ ads are broadcast day and night accompanied by the upbeat, nationalist jingle of campaign songs. Although there is limited Internet access, more than 60 per cent of the 180m population have access to TV, according to the Pakistan Advertisers Society.

For medium-sized channels, an average minute of advertising costs $460-500 during 6pm to midnight prime time or $250-300 earlier in the day, according to one television insider speaking on condition of anonymity.

Top-rated channels charge $2,200 dollars a minute for the 9-10pm slot, a source in the advertising business told AFP, adding that up to $300,000 is being spent a day by the main three parties on their television campaigns.

The outgoing PPP gives prominence to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, showing footage of her 2007 assassination and anointing her son Bilawal - still too young to contest the vote - as the country’s future. The main opposition and frontrunner PML-N lionises its leader Nawaz Sharif as a statesman and a developer, the man who knows how to fix the economy, beloved by a sea of flag-waving crowds.

Ads for cricket star Imran Khan - looking to make a breakthrough at the May 11 polls - offer voters a ‘new Pakistan’ with his PTI party symbol, a cricket bat, swiping away corruption and propelling the country into the future.

With Taliban threats against the main outgoing parties, Khan and Sharif are the only party leaders to address traditional public rallies in person. Ad men consider the election a two-horse race in which the PPP - rudderless without Bhutto and her son too young to run for parliament - has deliberately taken a backseat, consigned to a stint in opposition.

“It’s PTI and PML-N who are the highest spenders,” said Bilal Agha, general manager for Dawn News television. He said the Pakistan Broadcasters Association raised ad prices by 25 per cent and made political spots cash only, but that his channel had no favourites. “Whoever pays more, gets more,” he said.

Recently a popular anchor of a private news channel quit her job saying she would not sell her integrity.

“This elections in Pak, every1 - channel and anchor - is up for sale. I refuse to put a price tag on myself,” tweeted Sana Bucha.
For the first time, the election commission has capped spending on advertising in a bid to level the playing field between rich and poorer candidates, although there is no restriction on parties.

Any of the 4,671 candidates for the national assembly can spend up to 1.5 million rupees and the 10,958 provincial assembly candidates up to 1 million rupees.

Streets across the country have been festooned with colourful flags, banners and posters of different candidates with their leader’s mugshots and party symbols.

Supporters have plastered cars and taxis with party stickers, a sort of drive-by publicity that reminds those locked in traffic jams or weaving down Pakistan’s chaotic roads who they should be voting for.

Mohammad Faraz, manager of the Vital Lines printing house, denied print advertisements had lost ground to electronic media.

“People are not watching the television or listening to radio all the time, but they see these boards all the time when they leave home,” Faraz told AFP.

“We’ve been very busy for the last two months and most of us have not even had our weekends off. We’re working 24/7,” Faraz said.

Pakistani Taliban gives clean chit to PTI, PML-N, JI and JUI-F

Tuesday, 30 April 2013

01-05-2013
Last week, TTP distributed pamphlets in Buner and Peshawar in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and different areas of Karachi warning people not to participate in the election campaign or cast their votes at polling stations on May 11. The pamphlets warned voters that they would themselves be responsible for their own lives on the day.

On the other hand, Pakistani Taliban have announced that they will not target right-wing political parties including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led by former prime minister of Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) led by former Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), and Jamiat-i-Ulma Islam (JUI-F) led by Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman.

"Taliban shura had decided to target those secular political parties which were part of the previous coalition government and involved in the operation in Swat, Fata and other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwah," TTP spokesperson Eshsanullah Ehsan as saying.

PTI leader, Arif Alvi uses illegal-SIM card ?

Tuesday, 9 April 2013

09-04-2013
Karachi: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued the SIM card information of all candidates who have filed the nomination papers. According to ECP, none of the contact number has been registered to CNIC number (42000-0557068-7) of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, Arif Alvi.

Alvi is contesting the upcoming polls on NA-250 (Defence/Clifton), Karachi.

The question is that if none of the numbers are registered against the CNIC of Arif Alvi then his cell-phone number is registered to whose CNIC?

We all know that it is illegal to use a SIM which is not registered against your own CNIC number. PTI leader is using illegal SIM cards because none of the SIM cards are registered on his CNIC.

09-04-2013
Asma Chaudhry, a known TV anchor, has implicitly revealed that Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is set to lose next elections. It is because the current members of the infamous Pakistan's shadow king-maker group, Establishment, do not want PPP to win again.

PPP last tenure which brought nothing more than misery to Pakistanis is the major cause, but the tricks of establishment have always been in the game too. Due to the serious chances of facing humiliating defeat in elections, PPP upper-tier leadership, including Zardari, is thinking of boycotting the elections.
